NTT - DOCOMO OSAKA TOWER

2004

ID: 00000518

A relatively straightforward structural concept, the 145.55 meters tall steel tower perched on top of a 12-story communication facility represents the merging of innovative technologies from a variety of disciplines: from bridge and mechanical engineering to yachting apparatus.

Simply explained, the structure is a pinned column held upright by four pairs of stay cables. The spinal mast element is a 1.7m diameter hollow tube with a wall thickness that varies between 50-80mm. The cables are the parallel wire strand (PWS) type, 200mm in diameter, and made up of 499 galvanized steel wires wrapped in a polyethylene coating. Steel cast pieces form the cable connections.

In order to meet the antenna deflection angle criteria under the governing wind load case, multiple damping devices (TMD, RDT, and VCD) were installed.
